Education, Literacy & Youth Empowerment

Education is a pathway to opportunity, dignity, economic participation and stronger communities. HWA FOUNDATION works to expand access to learning, strengthen literacy and support children, young people and women with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to improve their lives, participate in economic and social opportunities, and contribute to their communities.

HWA’s education experience includes community and elementary education, adult literacy, education support and advocacy, school-based initiatives, school development planning, enrolment and attendance promotion, emergency and flood-affected education, safer schools and disaster preparedness, as well as vocational and technical skills development. HWA works with communities, schools, teachers, academic institutions, government stakeholders and development partners to strengthen educational planning, improve learning environments, promote school enrolment and regular attendance, and create accessible, inclusive and supportive learning opportunities for underserved populations.

HWA recognizes that education provides an important foundation for skills development, employability and economic opportunity. Its approach therefore seeks to connect learning with practical knowledge, life skills, vocational pathways and local economic opportunities. Through education and youth empowerment initiatives, HWA supports young people and women to build confidence, develop relevant skills and better prepare for employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.

HWA also promotes collaboration with academic institutions, technical and vocational education providers, government agencies, employers and development partners to strengthen links between education, skills development and opportunities in the wider economy. School development planning, enrolment and attendance promotion, community engagement and collaboration with academia and other stakeholders are intended to help create stronger and more responsive learning systems.

Recognizing that learning must continue even during emergencies, HWA has supported education and learning initiatives in communities affected by floods and other crises. Its work promotes safer and more resilient learning environments by linking education with disaster preparedness, risk awareness, life skills, community participation and resilience. Through community engagement and collaboration with schools and other stakeholders, HWA seeks to strengthen education systems, address barriers to enrolment and attendance, support children and young people to remain engaged in learning, and help create pathways from education and skills development towards employment, entrepreneurship and improved economic opportunities.

Building on its education and community development experience, HWA places particular emphasis on equipping young people and women with practical, market-oriented and income-generating skills. HWA seeks to connect skills development with local economic opportunities and support individuals and households in strengthening their capacity for employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.

Through its MAHIK Vocational & Technical Program, operational since 2012, HWA has provided vocational training and entrepreneurship-oriented skills that enable women and young people to pursue home-based work, self-employment and income-generating opportunities. The program provides a practical platform through which participants can develop skills that can be applied within their households, local markets and small-scale economic activities.

HWA also builds on its experience of working with communities to promote life skills, employability, entrepreneurship, youth participation and practical learning. Its approach encourages participants to identify and make use of available economic opportunities while strengthening confidence, practical capabilities and connections with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

Where appropriate, HWA seeks to develop partnerships with academic institutions, government and technical training providers, employers, private-sector actors and development partners to strengthen skills development, market linkages, entrepreneurship and employment pathways. Particular attention is given to opportunities that can benefit women, youth and underserved communities, including home-based and locally accessible forms of economic activity.

Through this integrated approach, HWA aims to help young people and women move from learning to practical skills, from skills to economic opportunity, and from economic opportunity towards more sustainable livelihoods and resilient communities.
